Variety is reporting that screenwriter Roberto Orci will direct the next Star Trek film. Orci was an executive producer and one of three screenwriters for the previous two films, and had allegedly been pushing Paramount to let him direct the next installment.
This is Orci's first directorial debut, but he either co-wrote or produced a number of films including Transformers, Eagle Eye, Cowboys and Aliens, Ender's Game and The Island. He also co-created Fringe along with JJ Abrams, who left the Star Trek series to direct Star Wars, and Alex Kurtzman, who recently parted with Orci professionally to allow both more time to direct films.
While there's no official word on what the next movie's plot will be, one source states that an early script has the crew of the Enterprise searching for the murderer of the lens flare that cluttered the first two films. And before anyone celebrates that Abrams is officially not a part of the third Star Trek movie, let's not forget that there's a 33% chance that Orci was the guy who thought temporarily naming Khan "John Harrison" was a good idea.
