WTF IS THIS?! Image Announces Nightworld, a Demonic Humor Romance Comic

We probably won't answer the question, but you'll find out about a cool new comic.

Hey there, readers, and welcome to another edition of WTF IS THIS?!, the column where we look at a new series announced by Image Comics featuring a concept so totally off the wall, all you can do is ask: WTF IS THIS?!

In today's column, we're taking a look at Nightworld, a new series Image sent us a press release about today. The comic is from the creative team of Adam McGovern and Paolo Leandri. Image calls them a "cult-hit" team. We're not sure if that means they are popular with a small but devoted fanbase, or popular amongst people in cults. We're guessing both. The book stars Plenilunio, a demon who "rules a haunted castle with his sleepwalking lover Lidia, and unwisely bargains with the evil Empyre to wake her. He’s in a race for the mystic Soul Key with teen-from-Hades Hotspot and the ruthless Hellena—agents of the Empyre with secret agendas."

WTF IS THIS?! The creators elaborate:

“We couldn’t be happier that our pop-art horror-show saga is at home with Image,” said McGovern. “It’s grindhouse humor and blockbuster visuals like you always wanted comics to be!”

In describing the feel of the art in NIGHTWORLD, Leandri said, "we tried to mix (in real authentic brushstrokes) a cocktail of gothic-horror mood, adrenalized action and personal drama, then garnish with a bit of humor; hope it tastes good!"

The art is pretty fantastic, at least from what we've seen. It's like Jack Kirby bumped into Mike Allred at a chemical factory, by which we mean he literally bumped into him, knocking Allred headfirst into a vat of powerful hallucinagens. The result is what you see below, which, of course, leads us to ask the question: WTF IS THIS?!

While we may not know WTF THIS IS, we do know it looks pretty fucking cool. Look for Nightworld in stores this August.

The Outhouse is sponsored this week by Late Nite Draw. Recently featured on ComicsAlliances' Best Art Ever, he is a Chicago-based commissioned artist with a self-published Digital+Print one-shot coming out in October about the abominable snowman called ABOBAMANIMABBLE, and is also available for commissions.
