Don't be afraid to gaze at this article. Sony Pictures Animation (SPA) announced today that their next project will be based (loosely) on the Greek mythological story of Medusa. Todd Alcott and Holly Golden did the pitch for this comedic take and Lauren Faust of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fame is attached as director.
Sony Pictures Animation president of production Michelle Raimo Kouyate described Medusa as a "clever, heartfelt animated comedy about a girl who's having the ultimate bad hair day". About the premise, Kouyate says:
"In our story, we meet Medusa as a young human, who, like so many of us, is overwhelmed with trying to fit a certain mold to please others.† Her resulting popularity ticks off the wrong Goddess who turns her into the snake-haired monster we all know and fear. Medusa sets out on a quest to reverse this curse with the help of a goofy team of oddball and misfit mythological creatures who help her learn that what makes you different is, in fact, what makes you strong.”
I guess that's one way to get around the gorgon's original story that was was the product of Phorcys getting it on with his sister Ceto. Awkward.
No release date has been announced for this project.but SPA does have Hotel Translyvania 2, the next Smurfs and Popeye coming in 2016. According to Box Office Mojo, there is another untitled film due September 2016, but it's unknown if that will be Medusa.
