Korean Spider-Man Statue Banned for Spider-Boner

Korean Spider-Man Statue Banned for Spider-Boner

The year-old statue was removed after pictures aroused too much interest on social media.

For the past year, an amazing statue of Spider-Man has stood tall atop a building at the Lotte Shopping Center in Busan, South Korea. But the statue was removed recently after complaints grew too large following a swelling of social media activity. So what's the problem? Take a look:

You might have to look a little closer...

Do you see it? How about now?

That's right. Spider-Man, for some inexplicable reason, has a massive spider-boner. To make matters worse, the statue was apparently erected above a children's playground and rest area. The artist, Eunsuk Yoo, defended his work in a Facebook post:

I am the artist who made this piece. My reason for it was that I wanted apply the natural physical phenomenon to a superhero depict whats's natural in the morning without lies and superficial-ness in a comical way.

There have been some comments on various community sites and Facebook pages that this is lewd and a disgrace to the source material. Lotte Shopping Center has received many complaint calls this morning from a certain organization, and after their meeting, it was decided that I have to either modify or take the statue down. Instead of modifying my work, I've decided to take it down.

It was ok for about a year and now it has to be taken down due a sudden interest in the piece, which is sad. But I understand that a piece that could be potentially interpreted as lewd can be offensive at a place like shopping mall. It's disappointing, but I'll reach out to the public with a better work next time.

Yoo was given the choice of modifying the statue or removing, and he chose the latter, refusing to limply surrender his artistic integrity to the firm grip of censorship. And so, we raise our hands... and other appendages... in salute to you, Eunsuk Yoo. May you continue to stand tall and stiffly for what you believe in... even if what you believe in is Spider-Man's spider-boner. You are a true Ameri... South Korean hero.
