Those obstreperous hooligans at Marvel Comics are at it again, trolling their
cross-town cross-country rivals at DC Comics by making fun of their propensity for 3D variant covers and obsession with the number 52 by releasing a special Deadpool #34 with 3D motion variant, available to retailers at a rate of one copy for every 52 regular copies they order. It's a hilarious joke, with the people's company, Marvel, sticking it to the man over at DC, and, of course, we're all going to laugh, and laugh, and laugh.
But wait! Come to think of it, Marvel is no stranger to gimmicky nineties variants themselves, as we know they're planning a special series of "weapon-etched holofoil variants" for their upcoming Death of Wolverine super-mega-crossover event. And along with Death of Wolverine, Deadpool #34 is one of fifteen comics in Marvel's September solicitations clocking in at an outrageous price of $4.99, according to the solicitation, even without the 3D variant. While all of the $4.99 issues have something "special" about them - a higher page count, for instance - comic book fans with a memory longer than a goldfish may remember that this is exactly the way the jump from $2.99 to $3.99 was introduced, and the jump from $2.50 to $2.99, etc., etc., etc.
So while we're never above having a laugh at the expense of stodgy old DC Comics while younger, hipper Marvel takes the piss out of them, we'd just like you to consider, for a moment, that perhaps Marvel isn't laughing along with you, dear readers. They're laughing at you.
Deadpool #34 will be in stores in September. The $4.99 price hike should be fully in place by this time next year.
