During the Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2014, it was revealed that Evangeline Lilly will be playing Hank Pym's (Michael Douglas) daughter, Hope Pym/Van Dyne in the upcoming Ant-Man movie. This was a small bit of a surprise as it is a new character, not someone from Ant-Man's history such as Janet Van Dyne (aka. The Wasp) [Correction: though not in the mainstream "616" Marvel universe, Hope Pym did appear as the "Red Queen" in the MC2 universe; thank you posters e_galston & IvCNuB4]. Since there was some confusion about Lilly's character, as she was initially referred to as "Van Dyne" and later "Pym", this left comic fans wondering if they'd see Jan.
Though not completely off the table, it seems a little less likely she would feature heavily in the movie. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly during SDCC, Michael Douglas shared the Marvel Cinematic Universe's take on Hanky Pym and a cryptic statement about Janet Van Dyne's fate:
"Let’s try to make this as concise as possible. My name is Dr. Henry Pym. I’m an entomologist. I’m also a physicist and I discovered in 1963, a way, a serum to reduce a human being to the size of ant maintaining the strength. Not only that, but I was able to find a way to communicate with the ants. But unfortunately during this process, a tragic personal accident happened with my wife, my daughter, Evangeline, Hope. So I’ve had to pass my powers and strengths onto a mentor. Because my partner, my partner, Corey [Darren Cross/Yellowjacket] over there, f–ked me good."
So it doesn't look that great for Janet Van Dyne fans.
Then again, when answering a question about if Pym will have any anger issues in the movie, Douglas responded with: "I’m not sure, I haven’t seen the script yet."
Not sure if he's joking.
The interview also went into other parts of the story which mostly has been covered elsewhere, like how Scott Lang (actor Paul Rudd, Ant-Man) is a thief, but hedoes it "for the right reasons". Also it's revealed that Rudd has a difficult time staying in the costume:
"Paul Rudd: I’ve ripped through three costumes already.
Peyton Reed: Four.
Paul Rudd: Four.
EL: That can be very uncomfortable.
Paul Rudd: And we haven’t… We’ve only been rehearsing."
Director Peyton Reed was asked if he communicated with previous director Edgar Wright after he accepted the reigns. Reed said "Edgar and I did exchange some emails, yeah." and that they were "Actually very good emails.".
