BOOM! announced a new comic yesterday from webcomic creator Jake Lawrence (BOOM! says he's popular on the Tumblr) called Teen Dog, billed as a cross between a John Hughes movie and a Nickelodeon cartoon. Published by BOOM!'s "experimental" BOOM! Box imprint, Teen Dog stars "the cool guy you always wanted to be in high school, à la Michael J. Fox and Ferris Bueller, except he’s a dog in a rad denim vest." Jokes on you, BOOM! We WERE the cool guy from high school (it's been all downhill ever since). From the press release:

Skateboards, football games, prom...your teenage years have got nothin' on the raddest dude that's ever graced a denim vest. Written and illustrated by Jake Lawrence (Time Cowboy), join Teen Dog and his best friend Mariella as they tackle typical teen life with a manic twist. Growing up is an adventure, and you might as well rock it!

I'm intrigued by this. On the surface, it's a fucking anthropomorphic dog in a denim vest eating pizza, and as much as I want to be cynical and hate on that, I just can't do it (that's your pull quote, BOOM!). In addition, I like that BOOM! is publishing books like this and Lumberjanes on the BOOM! Box imprint. They're taking risks with comics whose main appeal is outside the mainstream superhero market, and, in the case of Lumberjanes, which has gotten a lot of press and sold well, it's paying off for them. This is good for comics.

And that leaves me in the awkward position of being in the middle of an Outhouse article about a skateboarding dog with sunglasses and not having anything mean or snarky to say about it. To make matters worse, I'm writing said article on Vicodin, which is when I do my best snarky writing, having contracted a very nasty pinched nerve over the weekend. That's right, Rich Johnston got his tonsils out last week, and we weren't going to stand idly by and remain uninjured like we're not suffering for our journalism like he is. Hell, GHERU cut off his finger with a buzz saw this weekend, just to show how bad ass we are here at The Outhouse. Beat that, Johnston! Pip pip, motherfucker!

(No, I wasn't making that up.)

Anyway, I guess you win this round, BOOM!. Readers, you can check out webcomic strips of Teen Dog as well as other work on Jake Lawrence's Tumblr,  and here's some covers for the book:
