Marvel and the Kirby family just released the following statement:
“Marvel and the family of Jack Kirby have amicably resolved their legal disputes, and are looking forward to advancing their shared goal of honoring Mr. Kirby’s significant role in Marvel’s history.”
The Kirby family and Marvel had been involved in a number of legal disputes regarding the ownership of a number of classic Marvel characters that Kirby had co-created, many of which have appeared in major movie blockbusters for Marvel, Sony and 20th Century Fox. The Kirbys had filed for a termination of copyrights related to the Marvel characters Kirby co-created, which Marvel disputed, stating that Kirby was working "for hire" and that his family could not take ownership of characters he never owned. While the Kirbys had lost past legal battles, it appeared that the case might soon reach the Supreme Court, which may have spurred Marvel into reaching out and settling with the company.
While terms of the settlement were not made public, I'm sure many comic book fans are pleased to see this issue resolved and hopefully Jack Kirby's family has received fair compensation for his many contributions to Marvel.
