Industry Shocker: Scott Snyder, Hero to Us All, Wins Battle to Keep Batman Priced at .99

We need a hero! We're holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night! He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be fast and he's gotta be fresh from the fight!

Last week, we reported on DC's plans to raise the price of Batman to $4.99 an issue, the latest in the Big Two publishers' testing of the waters for an industry-wide price hike. We also told you about the efforts of the heroic Batman writer Scott Snyder and his trusty vigilante partner and Batman artist Greg Capullo, and their quest to force DC to change the price back to $3.99 because what the fuck who's gonna pay five dollars for a goddamn comic book?!

Well, it was a hard fought battle, but it looks like our heroes were VICTORIOUS!

Uh! Uh! Yeah! DC, tell us how our ass tastes! How's that for a thank you?

Sorry, got a little carried away there. But still, this is great news. If Marvel and DC have their way, they will continually raise prices as long as we'll pay it, and being the borderline junkies we all are about comics, you know we'll keep paying it. The price of comics has already far outstripped inflation, and with the decompression that leaves a five issue storyline more closely resembling a single issue comic from twenty years ago, the value per dollar for floppies is at an all time low.

Now is the time to take a stand against greedy price gouging, and knowing that we've got people like Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo on our side, standing up to the corporate menace of Marvel and DC, makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside, like the time they made us climb the ropes in gym class, or when we saw that Milo Manara Spider-Woman cover.

Though tomorrow's issue #35 will be $4.99, since it's already been printed, Batman will return to $3.99 and stay there after, and it will probably be a year before DC tries this again (though Marvel is currently still getting away with it on Death of Wolverine). Here's a letter DC sent to retailers announcing the change, from Bleeding Cool:

Following the amazing start of the “Endgame” storyline in BATMAN #35, DC Entertainment announces that BATMAN #36 and 37 – chapters two and three of “Endgame” – will be published with cover prices of $3.99 US each, as originally solicited!

These issues will keep their page count of 40, with 30 pages of story in each!

In addition, the combo pack editions of issues #36-37 will be priced at $4.99 US.

So cheers to you, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo! You may not be the heroes the comics industry deserves (those would probably be Larry Flynt and Dick Cheney), but you're the heroes we need right now.
