Nintendo's Mario Going To Sony?

Super plumber may star in his own animated film.

Sega is not the only one preparing their videogame properties for the big screen.

The Sony hack continues to flood the internet with all kinds of information about the company's personnel information, dirty laundry and also information about projects being worked on. One of the projects involves Sony Pictures "closing" the deal to acquire the rights to make an animated movie based on Nintendo's main mascot character, Mario.

In an October 23, 2014 email to Sony studio chief Amy Pascal, producer Avi Arad is quoted as saying "I am the proud father of mario the animated film". This appears to be a big deal to Arad, who refers to the license as "the mother load [sic]". Sony Pictures Animation President of Production Michelle Raimo Kouyate is said to have written to Arad the next day saying "Let’s build a Mario empire!" and "I can think of 3-4 movies right out of the gate on this."

If true, it's just the first stage on the way to a feature film. No story or crew have been slotted for the project (that we know of) though Pascal has been said to have mentioned Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack). However it doesn't appear the creator has been contacted about the project.

Nintendo, aside from the related Pokémon films (and an animated film based on its Animal Crossing game in Japan), has mostly stayed away from cinematic efforts in the West since the live-action Super Mario Bros. movie in 1993. Mario's nemesis Bowser did make an appearance in Disney's 2012 film, Wreck-It Ralph and the plumber did get a shout out there. Director Rich Moore did  say he would try to get Mario into a Wreck-It Ralph sequel, so the little plumber may be ready to come out for more motion pictures in the near future.

Nintendo, who somewhat competes (Nintendo considers themselves apart from Sony and Microsoft) with Sony in the videogame arena has expressed its interest in expanding its presence into other fields of entertainment, including movies. Actual Mario father Shigeru Miyamoto premiered some theatrical shorts based on his Pikmin game franchise this past October, so it might be interesting to see if Nintendo might want to leave thngs to Sony.

More should anything come out of this…
