Hell Freezes Over: Nonplayer #2 is Finished

The long delayed Image comic will see publication in 2015.

Nate Simpson announced via social media that the second issue of Nonplayer has been completed and should be released in May 2015.  Nonplayer #1 was one of Image's more heralded releases back in 2011, and the book was quickly optioned by WB for a potential movie deal.  Now fans of the book will finally be seeing the next chapter of the book nearly four years after the release of the first issue.

We knew some of the reasons for the book's delay: Simpson was injured in a serious biking accident, and he scrapped the first six pages of the second issue for what he considered to be inferior art.  Simpson revealed on his blog yesterday that there were a number of other issues compounding the delay too, which included the death of his mother, the birth of a child, and taking an unsatisfying job to help pay the bills.

Simpson doesn't seem to be trying to drum up sympathy or excuses for the delay, nor are the issues he faced unique among artists.  I do think that Nonplayer is a pretty good issue of the tenuous relationship between comics creators, their fans and retailers, and the demands placed on artists to complete work in a timely fashion for pay that often doesn't meet the needs of their family.  Heidi MacDonald has a longer piece over on the Beat which discusses, among other things, how Simpson represents a group of artists who really don't "fit" in the current comics publishing model, which is still dominated by the monthly periodical market.  Everyone should give it a read, because it's very smart and covers a lot of the underlying issues surrounding Nonplayer quite well.

I really enjoyed the first issue of Nonplayer and I look forward to pulling it out of storage and giving it a read before the second issue.  I'll be asking my retailer to order me a copy, and I hope that everyone who wants to read the second issue will do the same.
