RIP Yoshihiro Tatsumi

The master has reportedly passed away at age 79.

Details are still light, but comics blogger Paul Gravett is reporting that legendary manga artist Yoshiro Tatsumi has passed away at age 79. As Gravett states:

Yoshihiro Tatsumi is the ‘sensei’ or grand master of ‘gekiga’, a term he coined for the darker, more dramatic form of manga in Japan. His innovations were vitally important for Japanese comics and his lifetime’s work stands as some of the most psychologically powerful and humane narratives, not only in manga but in global comics culture.

Drawn + Quarterly, which publishes English translations of Tatsumi's work in North America, doesn't have anything on Tatsumi's passing on its website yet, but the publisher's official Twitter account is also reporting the news.

Tatsumi spent decades creating manga in a variety of formats, but his magnum opus is the semi-autobiographical A Drifting Life, which D+Q published in a massive volume in 2009. A work of intense self-examination and a document of the artistic evolution of a master storyteller, A Drifting Life chronicles Tatsumi's work process on such titles as The Black Blizzard, and it won two Eisner Awards (for Best Reality-Based work and Best US Edition of International Material – Asia).
