Man in Coma Since 1999 Outraged by Double Take's .50 Price Point for Ultimate Night of the Living Dead Line

The man can't believe comics have increased so much in price since he was last buying them.

In 1999, Newport News resident Tom Dennison was struck in the head by a falling piece of airplane refuse and lapsed into a coma for almost 15 years. After waking up, Dennison, with the help of friends and family, has slowly been reintegrating himself into society. As you can imagine, Dennison has had some trouble adjusting to a few of the changes in the modern world. The most recent obstacle to his recovery is the upcoming launch of ten number one issues from Double Take, a new comics imprint from Take-Two Interactive led by former Marvel publisher Bill Jemas, all priced at $2.50.

"Two dollars and fifty cents?!" balked Dennison when he read about the September launch in an article on popular comic book news site The Outhousers. "That's a fifty cent price hike in just fifteen years! Are they out of their minds?!"

According to statements made by Dennison to close associates, he is actually quite interested in the premise of the new line of comics, which sees ten new series launched in the universe of the classic 1969 film Night of the Living Dead. Dennison reportedly finds the concept of telling fresh stories featuring both familiar and new characters in the setting from the public domain movie "ingenious," especially since the zombie horror genre is so underrepresented in pop culture. He is also apparently "very excited" to get in on the ground floor of a new shared universe with the backing of a major entertainment company like Take-Two Interactive, calling it a "potential game changer" for the comic book industry. But for an entire two dollars and fifty cents? "That's highway robbery," Dennison proclaimed.

Dennison was hardly comforted when told that the price for subsequent issues of the Ultimate Night of the Living Dead line would remain at $2.50. Though he was glad that the price would not increase, he still felt that it was simply "way too much to start with," when, in his day, comics cost $1.99, "and not a penny more." However, he was intrigued by the project's use of something called "Kickstarter" to allow readers, collectors, and even retailers to preorder issues and receive various rewards based on the amount of money they pledge to back the project. By ordering using this mysterious "Kickstarter," readers could potentially acquire all ten issues for just one dollar each, or something called "digital editions," which Dennison hopes he can read on his Pentium computer from Radio Shack, for just fifty cents a piece. However, that doesn't lessen the blow of the $2.50 price point at retail.

"What will they use all this money for," Dennison reportedly wondered about the profits from the exorbitant $2.50 comics. "They'll be rolling in dough with these things, and will probably spend the profits on useless frivolities like advertising on a dumb satirical comic book website with little journalistic integrity and a penchant for hyperbole."

At press time, Dennison was said to be close to giving in and purchasing a "Super Pack" box set on Kickstarter, featuring all ten first issues for just ten dollars, which he remarked was "too good a deal to pass up." However, at that moment, Dennison's wife showed him the September 2015 Marvel Comics solicitations, featuring forty-five comics at $3.99 a piece and even six at $4.99. Dennison immediately swooned and was rushed to the hospital, where he has fallen back into another coma. Hopefully, he'll recover in the next two weeks so he can order before time runs out.

We'll keep you posted on Tom Dennison's condition. In the meantime, here's the solicits for the ten Ultimate Night of the Living Dead comics from Double Take, in case you want to see what had him all riled up:
