In Latest Budget Cuts, DC Comics to Ask Fans to Color Own Covers in January

Things must really be hurting - colorists barely made any money as it is!

Earlier this year, we reported on rumored "austerity measures" being imposed on DC Comics as a result of lagging sales. It seems that the situation continues to worsen for DC, as Bleeding Cool reports that the company cannot even afford to hire colorists for its January variant covers. Instead, the company will release the covers in black and white, asking readers to color them in themselves at home. DC isn't the first publisher to release uncolored comics and attempt to pass it off as a treat for readers. Marvel recently trademarked a line of "Color Your Own" comics, though it was pure corporate greed that reportedly motivated the initiative instead of desperation.

Get out your crayons and prepare to do the work of an underpaid colorist for free this January when DC's coloring variants hit a comic shop near you!
