Missing Diamond Shipments May Cause Retailer Woes on Biggest Comics Week of Year (UPDATED)

According to reports, a large pallet of comics shipments may have gone missing, affecting comics retailers in the Baltimore area.

According to a tip received by The Outhouse, a shipper for Diamond Comics Distributors has reportedly lost a "large pallet" of comics that will result in a "reasonably large percentage" of some store's comics orders not arriving this week. The missing comics are reportedly part of shipments from Diamond's Olive Branch, MS warehouse. Diamond holds a monopoly on mainstream comics distribution in the US, and this week's comics go on sale to readers tomorrow. The Outhouse was able to confirm with several retailers that some boxes were missing from shipments.

While accidents do happen, the matter is compounded by the fact that this is a huge week for retailers, not least of all because Marvel's Invincible Iron Man #1 ships this week, kicking off Marvel's All-New All-Different Not-A-Reboot Reboot. For retailers that don't have enough copies to fulfill reader orders, they could potentially lose business to other stores for customers unwilling to wait for replacements to ship, which is likely to be a large number of readers, given the addictive nature of comic book collecting and all the hype around Marvel's reboot. For some stores, this could be a very big deal.

We reached out to a representative from Diamond, who told The Outhouse that a shipment was returned to Diamond by a drop shipper, and that Diamond has express shipped the orders back out to retailers. Comics should arrive tomorrow, with toys sent back via two day shipping. If your local comic shop doesn't have their comics when you visit tomorrow morning, cut them some slack and try back a little later.

This story was updated to include Diamond's response, which was not yet available when first published.
