Poe Dameron, the hotshot X-Wing pilot from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, will be getting his own comic series from Marvel this April. Sorry Poe/Finn 'shippers, the comic is based in the pre-Force Awakens time period before the two characters met. Charles Soule will write the series with Phil Noto on art duties. Both have worked on recent Star Wars books for Marvel (Lando and Chewbacca respectively).

The new comic will give Poe a nemesis, a new character from the post Empire's First Order. Soule describes the new universe he is working in:

"… the way the Episode VII galaxy is set up, there are opportunities for new archetypes almost, and the bad guy we're working with is going to feel fresh and cool."

Soule also compares the series to Mission Impossible. Both classic (we'd guess Leia Organa) and new characters will populate the new series (also Poe's true love, BB-8). We already got sort of a prequel to Poe Dameron with Marvel's Journey to the Star Wars: The Force Awakens contribution, Star Wars Shattered Empire. In that title, we were introduced to Poe's parents: Shara Bey and Kes Dameron (Shattered Empire writer Greg Rucka also authored a pre-Force Awakens Poe Dameron story in the anothology novel Before the Awakening). Seems that Soule will take his origins into account:

"It’s silly not to explore the idea of a guy who grew up steeped in the Rebellion and the older Republic and all of those myths and legends" … "If you think about it, he grew up the way we did, hearing all of these stories."

It's true. All of it.

In the meantime series artist Noto has been researching lots of X-Wing references, and will be working from Poe Dameron's actor Oscar Isaac's body of film work to get his look.
