Could Rebirth be... Not Terrible?

The new DC Comics event has ambitions to fulfill the requests of fans, but can it succeed?

Ever since news broke from the cheeky British chap about a new DC Comics reboot, the comics community has been generally displeased. When the teaser for the big event, entitled Rebirth, was released, the fans were even less excited. Yet today has seen some interesting developments, including a couple of surprises.

While it was no shocker to see DC nail down exclusive deals with rising talent, some of which came as a blow to Marvel, Comic Book Resources' latest EXXXCLUSIVE!!!!!!! interview with Geoff Johns gave us some interesting information. Most notably the news that all books would drop to a price of $2.99 and Action Comics as well as Detective Comics would return to their original numberings. As Johns put it:

With "Rebirth," the mainline DC Universe titles will be renumbered with new #1s -- except for "Action Comics" and "Detective Comics," the two longest-running series in DC's lineup, which will return to their original numbering at #957 and #934, respectively. All DCU books will return to a $2.99 price point (currently their lineup is split between $3.99 and $2.99 single issues), and select core titles (details to come on exactly which) will shift to a twice-monthly schedule.

In a video attached to the article, Johns went on to explain that they felt the characters could be truer to their origins, and that Rebirth is set to do just that. The video never says that their current line of titles isn't true to the characters, but it implies it as much as a multi-million dollar company can without admitting fault.

Maybe we'll have to lose the Has DC Done Something Stupid Today? counter... Of course they still have known sexual harassers (allegedly), a tendency to run off top talent, gimmicky events that largely disappoint, a new biweekly output which is likely to affect art quality and/or consistency, and a penchant for bad decisions. And then there's... this:

This definitely sounds targeted at more long-time fans, more lapsed fans -- what about newer or more casual readers?

If you look at "Green Lantern: Rebirth" or "The Flash: Rebirth," absolutely it's targeted to fans who've read a lot of comics. Who have as many comics as me. But at the same time, people can pick it up, and there's enough in "Green Lantern: Rebirth" for someone to pick it up who has never read "Green Lantern" and understand what's happening. With "DC Universe: Rebirth," it's the same thing. If you have, like me, long boxes of DC Comics, you will be very happy. If you've never read a DC comic before, you won't be too lost. This is definitely for comic book readers more than it is for casual readers, just like "Green Lantern: Rebirth," but that doesn't mean it's exclusive of them.

So maybe they've still got a ways to grow.

Besides renumbering all their books, resetting the price point to $2.99, bringing back the original numbering of some comics, changing the shipping schedules, and signing exclusive new talent? It is in no way whatsoever anything resembling a reboot to me!

Here's the list of titles from CBR, which reveals the most shocking detail about the whole event of all: there are only 32, not 52, titles!
