Another property has entered the fracas to be king of the kaiju (giant monster) movies. Monsterpocalypse, based on the battle miniatures game of the same name, is the latest in the news having received the backing of studio Warner Bros. who beat down DreamWorks and Sony for the license.

Monsterpocalypse started life as a miniatures strategy game by Privateer Press, in which players control a giant monster (or giant robot) and associated forces against one another on a play mat populated by buildings using sets of dice. The game has had several expansions (including a Voltron-themed one  in 2010), and also had a short comic mini series in 2008. Talks of a Monsterpocalypse movie go back to 2010 with the likes of Tim Burton associated with it. That version of the movie was supposed to hit theaters in 2012. Things have been pretty quiet on the movie front until now.

Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead remake) will direct and co-write the Monsterpocalypse movie. It is being said that the movie is different now from the 2010 version, though the core concept (monsters vs. humans) remains intact.

If Monsterpocalypse finally gets made, it will be on a growing list of movies with kaiju. We'll be getting more Godzilla (from both Hollywood and Japan), Godzilla Vs. King Kong, Rampage, and maaaaaaybe more Pacific Rim. Oh yeah, there might also be a Voltron live-action movie, but it probably won't cross over with Monsterpocalypse like in the game, as lion-hands is owned by DreamWorks who lost the battle to get this license.
