'Dragonball Evolution' Writer Apologizes for His Part in Cinematic Crime Against Humanity

The writer for the movie, Ben Ramsey, apologizes to the Dragonball fanbase and to any poor soul who saw the unholy abomination of a film.

Some movies are so bad they'll linger for years, even decades. They'll haunt even the people behind it and make them apologize to this day for it.

I still recall the time six years ago when director Albert Pyun himself posted on these very forum boards and apologized for his role in 1990's Captain America. I'll say again, the dude made up for it a hundred fold by giving us Mean Guns (1997). Mr. Pyun, you rule for that movie (that so needs a good Blu-Ray release, you hear me Shout! Factory or someone. Ya gotta give this film the due it deserves in that format).

I'm side-tracking, but back to my main point. Now we have this with writer Ben Ramsey who wrote Dragonball Evolution (based on the STILL popular manga/anime series Dragonball). Have you repressed that or forgot that movie? Here let me make you remember that with this trailer:

I'm just gonna pause here, for a moment because you're probably screaming, "WHY THE HELL YOU POST THAT AND MAKE ME REMEMBER ZECHS?! WHY?! GOD HOW DID THEY SCREW THAT UP SO BAD?! OH GAWD THEY'RE GONNA DO THE SAME TO GHOST IN THE SHELL I JUST KNOW IT! WHY!? WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN US WITH SHITTY ADAPTATIONS OF MANGA HOLLYWOOD WHY?!"

Okay you have that out of your system yet?

You probably don't, but I'm just gonna continue on about the writer, Ramsey. So a fellow writer named Derek Padula, decided to reach out with an olive branch of trust/hope to interview the writer because he's writing a Dragonball book, and wanted to chronicle the dark time justly. Instead he got this post back from Ramsey (courtesy of I09 and posted on Padula's website):

I knew that it would eventually come down to this one day. Dragonball Evolution marked a very painful creative point in my life. To have something with my name on it as the writer be so globally reviled is gut wrenching. To receive hate mail from all over the world is heartbreaking. I spent so many years trying to deflect the blame, but at the end of the day it all comes down to the written word on page and I take full responsibility for what was such a disappointment to so many fans. I did the best I could, but at the end of the day, I 'dropped the dragon ball.'

I went into the project chasing after a big payday, not as a fan of the franchise but as a businessman taking on an assignment. I have learned that when you go into a creative endeavor without passion you come out with sub-optimal results, and sometimes flat out garbage. So I'm not blaming anyone for Dragonball but myself. As a fanboy of other series, I know what it's like to have something you love and anticipate be so disappointing.

To all the Dragon Ball fans out there, I sincerely apologize.

I hope I can make it up to you by creating something really cool and entertaining that you will like and that is also something I am passionate about. That's the only work I do now.

Best,

Ben

Now, I have to give it to Mr. Ramsey for doing such a classy thing. Also, the man, just like Mr. Pyun, shouldn't burden himself with sole responsibility for this film. There's always other reasons beyond either's control. Like the studio (Fox and 95.9% crazy nutcase head at the time/bane of X-Men movie fans existence Tom Rothman) doing stupid things.

But also like Mr. Pyun I just want to say to Mr. Ramsey: even though you wrote Dragonball Evolution, you wrote one of the guiltiest action movies pleasures of the 90s that I enjoy in the Big Hit (1998), yes that movie with Marky Mark as a hitman, but it had freaking Avery Brooks in it as one of the heavies, and add Lou Diamond Phillips was a fucking scene stealer in that too. You know what? I'm gonna pop that movie in honor of this dude. You deserve some kudos for that achievement! So we're square.

Now we just have to wait probably thirty more years for Michael Bay to apologize for destroying our 80s nostalgia with his various salvos of cinematic fare. Then again, I highly doubt we'll ever get an apology from him for any of the Transformers movies or his TMNT produced movie.  Plus he'll probably forget his cinema sins in that pile of money he sleeps in.
