Boyega Recruited For 'Pacific Rim 2'

A traitor to the Star Wars franchise?!

Source: ‘Star Wars’ John Boyega Takes Lead In ‘Pacific Rim’ Sequel

While a release date for the production troubled Pacific Rim sequel is still up in the air that hasn't kept things from moving forward on the movie. Steven S. DeKnight (Netflix Daredevil Season 1 showrunner) was recently announced as the director for the film; and Derek Connolly, a writer from Jurassic World, was also recently announced. No real news about the cast has been revealed, though it has been said that the sequel will be set "many years after the original movie" so there is a good chance the original cast may not be returning. Today we get one casting confirmation.

John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) has been cast in the lead role in Pacific Rim 2. He is said to be playing the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba). Pentecost sacrificed himself in the first movie (spoiler!) was sort of the adopted father of the co-lead Mako Mori (Rinko Kikcuhi). It's not known when Pentecost fathered a son.

Co-creator and director of the first Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro, had this to say about Boyega:

"I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. 'The World saving the world' was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job."

Perhaps someday we'll get a release date (and a trailer) for Pacific Rim 2…
