Nickelodeon President Steps Down After Having a Long-Ass Quiet Reign

Russell Hicks President of Nickelodeon is exiting after being with the company for eighteen years.

Though you may not know his name, Russell Hicks has been running Nickelodeon quite a long time. Though he isn't as infamous as some Cartoon Network executives, Hicks quietly ran the show and amassed quite an empire.

At the height of his power, he had complete say over all programs on Nickelodeon, Nick at Nite, Nick Jr., TeenNick and Nicktoons, both animated and live-action. Oh, sure half of that programming was mainly Spongebob Squarepants, but the man was the one who got the TMNT and Avatar: The Last Airbender franchises to Nick.

That all ended yesterday (per the Hollywood Reporter) due to continued shake-ups at Viacom (the company that owns Nickelodeon, plus MTV, VH1, and Comedy Central). No reason was given, save a memo that Cyma Zarghami, president of Viacom Kids & Family Group put out addressing his exit.

I'm almost curious if this has anything to do with how under-performing TMNT: Out of the Shadows is doing given Nick was behind the film (among a ton of other production companies besides a certain infamous one that's co-run by the pillager of 80s-nostalgia Michael Bay). Then again, Nickelodeon has been suffering as of late, and maybe Hicks just couldn't fix the woes it has now.

No word yet as to who'll be replacing him, but it'll be interesting to say the least what direction Nickelodeon goes from here on out.
