DC Reinvents Classic Character

...causing everyone to wonder, "who the !@#$ is Vigilante?"

Taking a cue from Marvel Comics about replacing their most well-known white male characters with non-white-male alter-egos, DC Comics is dipping its toes into the ocean of diversity with a new Vigilante series by writer Gary Phillips, artist Elena Casagrande, and colorist Giulia Brusco. The six issue mini-series, titled "The Vigilante: Southland," will star new character Donny Fairchild, described by DC as "a failed NBA player who's just making ends meet as a maintenance man." Fairchild is also black, whereas the old Viglante(s), who CBR tells us were apparently named Greg Saunders and Adrian Chase, were, we guess, white.

Normally, this would prompt an outraged response from racists complaining about the race, gender, or sexuality bending of established white male characters, but, thankfully, due most likely to the fact that no one has ever heard of "The Vigilante," no one is complaining. Unfortunately, not many people are talking about the new series at all, especially as it had the misfortune to be announced on the same day that Bleeding Cool spoiled every single Marvel announcement from San Diego Comic Con. To try to get the ball rolling on this and help DC out by provoking some controversy, we reached out to a local racist for comment.

"Yeah, I mean, I'm totally against this, of course," the racist told The Outhouse. "Why couldn't they just make a new character, yada yada, you know the deal by now. But I dunno, I just can't muster up enough racism to be mad about... who was it again?"

Vigilante.

"Yeah," he continued. "I'm not feeling this one."

The racist assured The Outhouse that his commitment to bigotry and xenephobia remained stronger than ever, and promised to be really angry the next time Marvel or DC changed the race of "a white character that anyone actually cares about."

It's a shame the series announcement is flying under the radar, because it might actually not only be a good comic, but also offer something deeper than the usual superhero punchy kicky fare. Here's what Phillips had to say about the series:

"'The Vigilante: Southland' is incredibly relevant to our times," added Phillips. "It's a politically tinged story that touches on a myriad of contemporary issues, such as gun violence, class struggle and Black Lives Matter. The book also provides me an opportunity to contemporize classic issues/tropes, like the fight over water rights in Southern California. I'm very excited to show readers this character, reimagined for the 21st century."

Check out the series description and some art below. Mitch Gerads will also provide covers for the series, which will be in stores on October 5th.

"The Vigilante: Southland" is the story of Donny Fairchild, a failed NBA player who's just making ends meet as a maintenance man. When his girlfriend stumbles on a conspiracy to steal water rights through a series of shady land-development deals, she's mysteriously murdered. Once Donny starts getting too close to the cause of her death, his house is blown up and he's left for dead. Determined to bring the killers to justice, Donny undergoes training from an urban legend known as the Eastsider to become a masked vigilante.
