Not long after word of actress Pom Klementieff being recruited for a "key role" in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it was thought she would be playing the Marvel character Mantis. Sure enough when it was announced that principal photography had begun on the movie, Klementieff was confirmed to be taking that role.
With the role cast, fans still wondered just what Mantis would look like on screen. We got a tiny hint of the look, at least knowing she would be sporting her antennae, via a story sketch by director James Gunn in his #WhatWeShotWednesday series of tweets:
Today, Gunn tweeted out the first piece of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 concept art by Andy Park giving us a better idea of what Mantis will look like in the movie (as well as the rest of the team):
You can see Mantis standing behind Star-Lord and Nebula. She is not green like she is currently in the comics (and like fellow Guardians Drax and Gamora), rather she looks a bit more like her early appearances in The Avengers (she debuted in The Avengers volume 1, issue 112) comics.
Entertainment Weekly had an interview with Guardians executive producer Jonathan Schwartz who talked a little bit about the character in the movie:
"She has never really experienced social interaction" … "Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from."
You might notice that Groot is still a sapling in the sequel. Schwartz also had this to say about our favorite tree-like character:
"He doesn’t have the wisdom and experience of that [first Guardians of the Galaxy movie] Groot" … "He’s a younger Groot and a more rambunctious Groot. The question is, is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that’s sprung up from the seed of the first Groot?"
*shrugs* He is Groot.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 boogies into theaters May 5, 2017.
