'Space Battleship Yamato 2199' Anime (And Its Follow Up!) May Dock In America Again

Hopefully it will do better the second time around…

Source: The Producer Speaks, June 2016

Space Battleship Yamato was a popular 1974 anime series about a repurposed World War II Japanese warship, which took on a mission to travel across the galaxy to save a devastated Earth. The original series had multiple seasons, movies, and versions). The series came over to the USA in 1979 (dubbed and edited) as Star Blazers. In 2012, a remake of the original story titled Space Battleship 2199 aired, and an effort to release the series in the USA as Star Blazers 2199 launched in 2014. Unfortunately, the series somewhat fizzled in the USA, and the latter discs are difficult to find (were they ever released at all?).

Fast forward to March of this year and a new series, Uchū Senkan Yamato 2202: Ai no Senshi-tachi (Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love) was announced. Not much is known about the series yet, with little bits and pieces trickling onto its official web page (like it looks to bring in the Andromeda, yes!). 2202 is thought to be the year that season III of the Yamato series (Bolar Federation), and the movie Be Forever Yamato. The good news is that there is a chance that both Yamato 2199 and 2202 will be making their way to our shores someday soon.

In the Ship's Log, the Yamato Crew Premium Fan Club magazine, where subscribers do actually get news for upcoming Yamato things there was an interview (translated by the good folks at Cosmo DNA) with producer Hirotaka Furukawa who hinted at the possibility of these series coming over. This revelation came in an answer to a question about the Hollywood version of Yamato:

Interviewer: How about the Hollywood version of Yamato?

Furukawa: I went to America for a meeting in March with the president of Skydance Productions. The script is done, and there should be a large-scale announcement next summer, including the staff and cast. As for the overseas development of Star Blazers 2199, we'll syndicate it in Italy, Germany, France, and America. We're talking with a distributor and we want to deploy Star Blazers 2202 along with 2199. If all goes well, we'll make an effort to deliver a new work of Yamato to international fans with very early timing.

So we may be getting both series in America, and perhaps not long after 2202 is released? That's great news, though it is not specified when 2202 will air yet. Still, it's nice to see what can happen when the folks making a Hollywood version of a movie (say something that rhymes with Smobodreck) actually consults with the Japanese creators who are willing to help.
