Fans May Not Need To Torrent The 'Star Trek' 2017 Series After All… Outside North America

Deal cut with Netflix

When the Star Trek 2017 television series was first announced, it seemed doomed to not be seen legally by viewers as it was going to be exclusively (after the first episode) on the CBS All Access streaming service. Now it has been announced that in 188 countries the new series will be available on Netflix within 24 hours of each episode's airing… but not in the US and Canada.

Yes in the US, you'll still have to subscribe to CBS All Access and in Canada it will be available on Bell Media’s cable networks, Space (in English) and Z (in French), and later exclusively on the CraveTV streaming service. Though Netflix is in many countries, it hasn't taken a major foothold in them like it has in the USA. So… yeah.

It isn't all bad news for Star Trek fans who have Neflix though. Fans of previous series will be able to get their fix via Neflix:

Additionally, all 727 existing episodes of the iconic “Star Trek” television library – including “Star Trek: The Original Series,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Star Trek: Voyager” and “Star Trek: Enterprise” will be available on Netflix around the world by the end of 2016.

US fans who want to watch something else starting with "Star" in its title on Netflix, can also go with Star Wars starting September. Earlier this year, Netflix sealed a dea with Disney to have exclusive streaming of their content, including Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm that debuted after December 31, 2015 (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opened before that date, will debut on Starz).

Should we call Guinness for an episode 2 record?
