Mystery Solved! The First Live-Action 'Pokémon' Film Will Be…

… Oh come on, you'll have to click the headline to find out!

Source: 'Pokemon' Movie Rights Land at Legendary

The word that there would be a live-action Pokémon movie came to light when rumors had the property in a three-way battle between studios. More recently it seemed that Legendary Entertainment was poised to capture the license, and it looks like their balls were good enough, as Legendary and The Pokémon Company announced that they would start production on the live-action movie in 2017.

They must have used Quick Balls.

So what will this new movie be? Will it be Red's story? Ash's? Will it pit Legendary's Godzilla against Mythical Pokémon Arceus? No, apparently it will be:

"… based on Detective Pikachu, a new character in the Pokemon universe.

Details on the plot and story of the character are being kept under wraps."

Though it isn't made quite clear, it does sound like they are basing it on a Nintendo 3DS game currently only released in Japan titled "Meitantei Pikachū: Shin Konbi Tanjō" or in English, "Great Detective Pikachu: Birth of a New Duo". The game features a talking Pikachu who teams up with a human Tim Goodman (the only person who can understand him) who is looking for his father. The duo go through the game solving crimes, and (Spoiler!) ends with a "to be continued".

Here's a trailer for the game (in Japanese). The trailer makes it easy to visualize a live-action movie spinning off from this. People may be surprised to see the deep-voiced Pikachu who is somewhat lewd…

It's not confirmed that the Detective Pikachu game will be the basis for the movie, but it seems likely. It might be a good idea to release this game stateside if so Nintendo!

No release date has been announced, but they are starting up production soon, so we might see it more quickly than we would have guessed. That's the power of Pokémon Go!
