Putting an end to any debate over the subject, screenwriter Brian Azzarello offered an intelligent, well-reasoned defense to criticism of DC's animated Killing Joke movie, which reportedly sees Barbara Gordon obsess over an emotionally distant Batman for half of the movie before finally straddling him after a fistfight, removing her mask and shirt, and having #Batsex with him while a creepy gargoyle who eerily resembles Azzarello himself watches, before later presumably being fridged as in the original comics story. When fans at the Killing Joke panel at Comic Con disagreed with over Gordon's purported status as a "strong female character" in the film, Azzarello reportedly responded to a question from Bleeding Cool reporter Jeremy Konrad by saying, "Wanna say that again, pussy?"

On Twitter, Azzarello denied that he used the pejorative term for a woman's vagina to describe a man lacking courage, saying instead:
