Though there was no footage to be shown from the upcoming Black Panther movie at the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) Marvel Studios panel, there was still a couple of announcements. The movie was the first of the slate of film covered during the panel, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced that director Ryan Coogler would start filming the movie in January.
Black Panther himself Chadwick Boseman (who we've already seen in the role) was at the panel, but other cast members were also in attendance. Confirming earlier reporting, Michael B. Jordan (Fantastic Four) and Lupita Nyong'o (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) are in the film.
Michael B. Jordan will play Erik Killmonger. Killmonger in the comics was a Wakandan named N'Jadaka, whose father was strongarmed by Ulysses Klaw to helping him. Disgraced, N'Jadaka and his family were exiled and he ended up in New York taking a new name, Erik Killmonger. He eventually made his way back to Wakanda with plans to take it over and restore it to its ancient ways.
Lupita Nyong'o will be playing a character named Nakia. In the comics, Nakia was very much in love with T'Challa, obsessively so. She was once a member of the Dora Milaje, body guards and concomitants to the king. Her obsessive actions though, led to her leaving the Dora Milaje and Wakanda in disgrace. She was rescued by Killmonger and given a new name: Malice.
Another new cast member was also introduced:
Danai Gurira is Okoye, the head of the Dora Milaje!!! *runs around freaking out* #MarvelSDCC— Ryan Penagos (@AgentM) July 24, 2016
Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead) will be playing Okoye. In the comics, Okoye is one of the Dora Milaje, while in the movie she will be playing the head of the group.
