In the latest achievement in his quest to do absolutely anything other than finish writing The Winds of Winter, author George R. R. R. Martin has announced a new TV deal for his "Wild Cards" anthology series with Universal Cable Productions. After describing his 32 course breakfast, which included eggs scrambled, poached, and in a basket of french toast, with syrups of maple, boysenberry, and plum, six rashers of bacon, sausage pie, and Cookie Crisp cereal topped with milk of a cow and flanked by several flagons of iced coffee in a blog post this morning, Martin explained the potential of the new series:

Wild Cards is a series of books, graphic novels, games... but most of all it is a universe, as large and diverse and exciting as the comic book universes of Marvel and DC (though somewhat grittier, and considerably more realistic and more consistent), with an enormous cast of characters both major and minor. There are thousands of stories to be told in the world of the Wild Cards, and Gregory and Melinda and UPC hope to be able to tell many of them.

Martin went on to say that he was really looking forward to spending all of his time crafting a shared universe on the scale of the ones created by numerous legendary creative figures like Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, and Dan Didio, which Martin believes is a perfectly reasonable endeavor that will surely still allow him time to complete his popular Song of Ice and Fire novels before he dies.

The first volume of Wild Cards was published in 1986, so Martin looks forward to the TV show overtaking the book material by approximately season 3. We'll keep you updated.
