Assault Rifle Manufacturer Will *Not* Exhibit at Wizard World Chicago

Well, that didn't take long, did it?

Earlier today, we were alerted on Twitter to the fact that DS Arms, a firearms manufacturer specializing in assault rifles like the AR15, would be exhibiting at the upcoming Wizard World Chicago comic convention.

A post on the company's Facebook page confirmed:

It was unclear whether the company planned to sell guns at the show, so we delegated the investigation to one of our top researchers:

But before Johnston could crack the case, Tom Spurgeon over at the Comics Reporter brought the story to a conclusion. According to Spurgeon, the company was only going to display fake weaponry inspired by geek properties like Star Wars, but Wizard World responded to fan complaints, as well as the potential negative publicity of having a company that manufactures advanced tools for killing people exhibiting at a comic convention, by disinviting DS Arms. Wizard released the following statement:

A scheduled exhibitor at our upcoming Wizard World Comic Con Chicago event, one which had been included through a third-party partner, was to have displayed and presented imitation, costume Star Wars and other movie/comic type weaponry. But, as it has come to our attention that the organization markets and sells actual, real-life weapons, we have elected to not retain them as an exhibitor at the event.

Wizard World Comic Cons celebrate many facets of pop culture and entertainment. The vast majority of these are suitable for all ages; some are intended solely for adults. We are committed to providing a wide variety of entertainment options within our venue and associated businesses, with safety a top priority.

So there you have it. Wizard World will not have a gunmaker exhibiting at Wizard World, but only because people noticed. Otherwise, it was happening.

That about covers everything, except for the inevitable gun control argument in the comments, so have at it, we guess.

UPDATE: Looks like we spoke to soon. DS Arms booth has been reinstated, according to the latest report.
