There was a livestreamed press conference for the sequel to Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (aka. Star Blazers 2199) which provided some news on the format and timing for Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Ai no Senshi-tachi (Warriors of Love). 2202 will be a series of seven animated theatrical movies, the first of which will launch in theaters February 25, 2017 (with a pre-screening event on February 6).

The first movie will also get a same day special edition release on Blu-ray, as well as a digital release. The regular edition Blu-ray and DVD will be released on March 24. It appears that the format will echo what was done for Yamato 2199, with several episodes strung together shown in theaters, later being released on video. Yamato 2199 was then later aired on television, but a televised version hasn't (yet) been announced for Yamato 2202.

Space Battleship Yamato chronicles the adventures of the World War II-styled spaceship and their efforts to save and protect the Earth. Crunchyroll pegs 2202 as a remake of the episodes featuring the crew of the Yamato facing off against the Comet Empire. That adversary was featured in the movie Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato and the second season of the original television series.

The conference also featured a very brief teaser for Space Battleship Yamato 2202:

Previously, producer Hirotaka Furukawasaid that he is working to get both Space Battleship 2199 (again) and Space Battleship 2202 to western audiences, so this news may be of interest to Yamato fans and anime fans in general.
