Cue the cries of "Nintendooooomed!" and "Nintendo is going third-party!". Our favorite videogame plumber is making his way through the internet's series of tubes and onto iPhones (and iPads) everywhere. Sure, there are tons of Mario clones and rip-offs already on Apple's App Store, but this time it is legal.

Nintendo Creative Fellow and legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who came up with the concept of Donkey Kong where Mario makes his debut, joined Apple CEO Tim Cook on stage at the "See You on the 7th" iPhone event to make the announcement. The game will be titled SUPER MARIO RUN, and as the name implies, it will be an endless runner-type game like Temple Run or Flappy Bird. Mario will always be moving, and you can control how he jumps, with the familiar goal of collecting coins and reaching the flagpole before time runs out. According to the app's web page, there will be three modes, the first with the courses you complete, the second where you challenge the play data of others, and the third with you creating your own Mushroom Kingdom using coins collected in the other modes. The app's web page also touts the game being "playable using only one hand". Rejoice!

Minor Update: Nintendo Wire posted the SUPER MARIO RUN segment from the event:

SUPER MARIO RUN is listed for iOS 8 and above, though it may come to other mobile platforms. It should be available holiday season 2016 and may come at a "premium price", though the App Store page currently lists it as "Free". It seems in-app purchases will also be available.

It doesn't look like this is part of Nintendo's mobile efforts with DeNA, which spawned their first mobile appMiitomo, and promised games based on Animal Crosslng and Fire Emblem slated for later this year. Sorry Nintendo fans waiting for news on its next big platform codenamed NX, we'll have to continue to wait for information on that.

The Nintendo-related news at the Apple event did not end there though. It was also announced by developer Niantic, that an Apple Watch app for the wildly popular Pokémon GO mobile app is in development. With this app, you don't have to go through the arduous task of taking out your phone to check when you are near a Pokéstop, or to hatch eggs, or to find out how far you've traveled. Pokémon GO for Apple Watch should be available before the end of 2016.
