Issue 34 is the last issue of Sex, by Joe Casey and Piotr Kowalski, in its current form at least. In the back-matter, Casey went on to describe the future of the comic and the grind of a monthly book.
Monthly comic books are a grind. No doubt about it. Creator-owned comic books in particular -- when you make them like we do -- can be a certain kind of grind that takes its toll over time.
This grind has convinced Casey to move in a different direction.
We're going to transition from the monthly comic book format to a strictly graphic novel format. Don't be scared. Don't be upset. Just let it wash over you. Let it happen.
The fifth volume of Sex is set to come out in February. The complete sixth volume will then follow in late 2017.
On several different occasions in the past year or so, I've come to realize that this is probably the final, long-form, serialized, creator-owned comic book that I'll ever write. The market is such that, unless you're some sort of runaway success right out of the gate, maintaining this kind of a narrative over years and years -- in the monthly comic book format -- can be a tough row to hoe.
Expect more OGNs from Casey in the future.
