Shortly after Gerry Duggan won the right to write Guardians of the Galaxy, former GOTG writer Brian Michael Bendis announced a new Defenders series, coincidentally launching the same year as the tv show.
Doing our job for us, Marvel's Senior VP Executive Editor Tom Brevoort said the following.
"There are a lot of fans who will say, 'Oh they're doing a TV show, so of course there's going to be a comic,' but at least in this case, there's a comic I can point you to," Brevoort tells Heat Vision. "Read the last two pages of Brian's New Avengers! Certainly that there is a big new exciting Netflix TV show coming is a good excuse for us to get to that story that we planted the seed on."
Another coincidence is that the comic will keep the same tone of the television series, being based on the gray worlds of the heroes' stories, having the Defenders take on the criminal empires vying for dominance in New York City and Hell's Kitchen. Bendis hammered home the point that he didn't know about the television show in an EXXXCLUSIVE follow up saying, "Netflix? I've never heard of it. I'm more of a Sony guy myself."
Bendis is once again teaming with artist David Marquez, whom he last worked with on Civil War II.
