Twentieth Century Fox Film chairman Stacey Snider stated in a Q&A that the tonal shift going into Logan initially drew concerns from studio executives. For some reason, a serious take on a viciously animalistic man with knife hands palling around with a little girl worried the executives.

"It's more of an elegy about life and death. The paradigm for it was a Western, and my colleagues were up in arms. It's not a wise-cracking cigar-chomping mutton-sporting Wolverine, and the debate internally became, isn't that freakin' boring?

This pivot comes in contrast of the light-hearted nature of the previous X-Men films, where they went easy on the Wolverine fight scenes. Logan director James Manigold made sure to bring a realism to the film, going so far as to explain why Professor X had hair.

Logan is set to release March 3.
