Walking Dead Showrunner Scott Gimple Knows More About Walking Dead Comics Than Robert Kirkman

Straight from the horse's mouth.

At the Robert Kirkman panel about Robert Kirkman starring Robert Kirkman at Emerald City Comic Con, Robert Kirkman explained why the later seasons of The Walking Dead felt closer to the source material than earlier season. The reason being current showrunner Scott M. Gimple. Kirkman said that Gimple is a nerd who read the comics before the TV show existed.

"Scott Gimple started reading the comic book before the show ever existed. Frank Darabont, the first showrunner, and Glen Mazzara, the second showrunner, delightful people, did not follow the comic book as closely as Scott Gimple follows the comic book, because they were not avid comic book fans and readers the way that Scott Gimple is."

Gimple also knows more about The Walking Dead comics universe than Kirkman does, because why does Kirkman care about something that sells 85,000 copies, when the TV show averages 13,000,000 viewers.

"Oftentimes in the [writers'] room for season 2, they would say, 'We're going to do this with so and so,' and I would go, 'Well, actually, in the comic book, we did this,'" Kirkman shared. "And Scott Gimple would go, 'Well, actually in the comic book, you did this,' and I would go, 'Oh, yeah you're right.' So when he became showrunner, not only was he more familiar with the comic books, he was also intimately familiar with where the comic books are going."

Meanwhile, Kirkman is too busy shit talking other publishers to care.
