Marvel Bravely Announces 'Secret Empire: Brave New World' Series

Will it be a utopia or dystopia for comic fans?

Not content to just release one-shots tying in to their Summer Secret Empire event, Marvel walked up to the mic, puffed out its chest, and announced its Secret Empire: Brave New World series. The one-shots (so far) seem to feature stories about characters resisting Captain America and Hydra, but this series may be a bit murkier.

It sounds like the new series will be an anthology type, exploring "how every corner of the Marvel Universe lives in a world overrun by the hordes of Hydra", with some stories continuing from one issue to the next. One of the stories will feature some of Cap's oldest allies -- Namor, Human Torch (Jim Hammond), and Toro aka.  The Invaders -- and how they deal with Steve Rogers siding with the forces they fought in World War II as they defend Atlantis from Hydra. It won't just be the Invaders; Blade, Gwenpool, and an all new Patriot will also have stories in Brave New World.

Series editor Charles Beacham makes it sound pretty essential to buy into the series:

"This series shows how many different characters—heroes, villains, and everyone in between—from all across the Marvel Universe are effected [sic] by the Hydra take over and it’s VERY integral to Secret Empire."

As we mentioned, this series may be a bit murkier than the one-shots. It may be that some heroes will be siding with Cap. Beacham teases:

"… the interesting thing about Secret Empire is the way Steve manages to convince longtime allies to side with him" … "He’s not just an all-out villain. He’s still Steve he still wants to save the world. His process for doing it is just different. And some of his allies see this new resolve as the best road to a better future. As for who’s going to fall in with Cap… You’ll have to pick it up!"

Also, Beacham notes it may not just be the heroes:

"Steve’s takeover is so holistic that the villains are kind of in the same boat as the heroes—they can either fall in line or stand and fight!"

Paul Allor will be the series writer, with different writers and artists contributing to each issue. The first two issues will be out in June.

Secret Empire: Brave New World #1 will be written by Paul Allor, Jeremy Whitley, and Nick Kocher; with art by Brian Level, Diego Olortegui, and Will Robson.
