Another Hint That 'Space Battleship Yamato 2202' (& More) Will Hit Western Shores

Not sure if we want some of that "more"…

Source: Yamatour 2017 travelogue, part 1 continued

Space Battleship Yamato (Uchū Senkan Yamato) was a 1974 anime series chronicling the voyage of the Yamato to a distant galaxy on a mission to save the Earth. The series was brought to the west in 1979, slightly altered and dubbed, under the name Star Blazers. In 2012, a reimagined version of the first series was released titled Space Battleship Yamato 2199, and that version (mostly) made it to our shores in 2014 on disc as Star Blazers 2199 (this version was subtitled and the characters retained their original names).

In 2016, a follow-up to Yamato 2199 was announced: Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Ai no Senshi-tachi (Warriors of Love). The first episode has already played in Japan, and a writer from the Yamato fansite Cosmo DNA site attended it, as well as purchased the first Blu-ray for the series. The purchase confirmed a rumored detail of the disc, that it did not have English subtitles like the Yamato 2199 ones did.

That might not be a completely bad thing though. Previously, Yamato 2202 producer Hirotaka Furukawa said:

"As for the overseas development of Star Blazers 2199, we'll syndicate it in Italy, Germany, France, and America. We're talking with a distributor and we want to deploy Star Blazers 2202 along with 2199. If all goes well, we'll make an effort to deliver a new work of Yamato to international fans with very early timing."

And in the recent Cosmo DNA article, this is further confirmed. The author traveled to a restaurant in Sengawa named Yakitori Yamato. The restaurant is owned by Shoji Nishizaki, an executive producer on the Yamato series, and it has some Yamato flair to it. As luck would have it, Nishizaki was actually in the restaurant at the time he visited and the producer offered to answer some questions.

One of the questions was about the Yamato 2202 Blu-ray not having subtitles, to which Nishizaki said:

We’re working on an international deal. An official announcement hasn’t been made yet, but it will be.

So there it is. Reconfirmation that Yamato 2202 will be headed west.

However, that's not all. He also reconfirmed that… ugh… the Hollywood version of Yamato is still in the works:

The script is still being worked on, and the goal is to get it out either late 2018 or early 2019. He also repeated his observation that there are “three great S titles” in SF – Star Wars, Star Trek, and Star Blazers.

Oh well.

There's another piece of good news for Yamato fans though, Nishizaki also said that there is another Yamato project (presumably an animated series) already in the development!

We'll keep you updated should the release of Yamato 2202 for the West be officially announced.
