John Simm Returns as the Master to 'Doctor Who', And You Will Obey Him!

The sixth Master is returning to the program to join the seventh (played by Michelle Gomez). You know what this means? The day of the Masters is at hand!

One of the fun bits that I always loved about Doctor Who was that even through regenerations and the many actors who played the Doctor. It was always a kick to see them deal with Anthony Ainley's third Master confronted four Doctors (five if you count "Prisoners of Time" comic with this interpretation of the Master encountering the 11th Doctor) over throughout the 80s and early 90s (Destiny of the Doctors video game, which was Ainley's final portrayal as the Master). So while I do enjoy Michelle Gomez's Missy.

So while I do enjoy Michelle Gomez's Missy, and hopefully she stays on when Pete Capaldi's 12th Doctor takes his final bow at the end of this year. But, there's always been the lack of seeing more than one Master in the same room together (something that has never happened on the TV series EVER. The comics, yes.) or again seeing a past Master duke it out with a current Doctor. Well, it looks like both WISHES ARE GRANTED!

John Simm aka the Sixth Master is coming back to Doctor Who and for the first time ever will be sharing the screen with his seventh counterpart (Gomez) and taking on the 12th Doctor (Capaldi). Simm had this to say today about his "masterful" return to the series:

I can confirm that it's true, thanks to the power of time travel I'm back. It's always a pleasure to work with this great team of people and I can't wait for you all to see what the Master gets up to in the next series.

The last time we saw Simm's version was during David Tennant's 10th Doctor's finale in "The End of Time" back in 2010. So it shall be neat seeing this version of the Master take on Capaldi and share the screen with his successor in Missy.

Here's what current series head writer/producer, Steven Moffat had to say of the two Masters:

Nothing stays secret for long on Doctor Who but you'll have to wait a little bit longer to see exactly what the Master is up to and how he makes his return to face the Doctor. It's been a huge pleasure to have fan favourites John Simm and Michelle Gomez face to face in the same role! It's not often you get to see a solo personality clash.

Still, one has to wonder if there might be more Masters showing up? After all, Geoffery Beevers (the second actor to play the 2nd Decaying Master), Eric Roberts (the 4th Master), and Derek Jacobi (the 5th Master) are still kicking around too. Still, having two Masters on the same screen will be quite masterful by itself.

I guess we shall find out when the new season of Doctor Who starts April 15th. Until then, they are the Master and you shall obey them!
