Looks like we'll be getting more animated Star Wars this Summer. Disney already has the second season of LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures running on its Disney XD stations, and now we'll be getting new animated fare on its internet channel. Disney and Lucasfilm will be bringing Star Wars Forces of Destiny animated shorts (2-3 minutes each, similar in format to the 2003 Star Wars: Clone Wars micro episodes that aired on Cartoon Network) to the Disney YouTube channel this July. Additionally a 2-part TV special with 8 additional shorts will air on the Disney Channel in the Fall.

Headlining the stories will be the women of Star Wars. Characters like Princess Leia, Ahsoka Tano, Sabine Wren, Rey, and Jyn Erso will be the stars of these shorts. Furthermore, Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka Tano), Tiya Sircar (Sabine Wren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), and Felicity Jones (Jyn Erso) will be reprising their roles for these shorts. Lupita Nyong'o will be returning as Maz Kanata to narrate the show.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy pitches the show:

"Star Wars Forces of Destiny is for anyone who has been inspired by Leia’s heroism, Rey’s courage, or Ahsoka’s tenacity" … "We’re thrilled that so many of the original actors are reprising their roles in these shorts which capture the small moments and everyday decisions that shape who these characters are."

We did say Forces of Destiny was an initiative. This initiative will also be getting a line of toys, including a line of "Adventure Figures" which are described as a "fusion of traditional dolls and action figures". They are 11 inches in scale with multiple points of articulation. In addition to the Forces of Destiny stars, villains such as Kylo Ren and allies such as Chewbacca will also be part of the line.

Role play toys will also be released for the Forces of Destiny line, which will include Rey's extendable staff, and a Jedi power Lightsaber. Apparel and bedding are also in the works.

Book lovers will be glad to know that there are books coming as well. Two volumes have been announced, each with three stories. The first volume will feature Sabine, Rey, and Padmé, while volume 2 will feature Jyn, Ahsoka, and Leia.
