Marvel Cancelling Black Panther And The Crew One Month After Launch

Well, Marvel VP of Sales David Gabriel did say people no longer want diversity.

Marvel received great press when they first announced a new Black Panther series in April 2016. The book sold well enough, with Marvel launching its first spinoff World Of Wakanda in November of the same year. A second spinoff was announced in January called Black Panther & the Crew, written by the same critically-acclaimed writer of the first series Ta-Nehisi Coates, with Butch Guice on art.

Late March saw Marvel EIC Axel Alonso get a profile in Fortune magazine on the same day that Marvel VP of Sales David Gabriel said that people are "turning their noses up" at diversity. Flash forward to a month and a half later and Black Panther & The Crew gets the axe. The first issue sold 35,604 copies, higher than a lot of other Marvel titles that didn't get cancelled. Sure, Black Panther sold 253,259 out of the gate, after an enormous PR push, but #13 sold only 30,509 last month.

Coates says that “the mystery will be solved,” even though the series couldn't find an audience, but how could it when its cancelled a month after its debut?
