As promised yesterday, Vanity Fair has published a portfolio of pictures by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz of the Star Wars: The Last Jedi cast and crew. The next issue of the magazine will shine the spotlight on the upcoming movie, and will not only include Leibovitz's portrait portfolio, but other associated articles.

In one of the preview articles, we get a bit of behind-the-scenes on the making of the movie and a reflection on Carrie Fisher's passing. Fisher was to be at the center of the next Star Wars saga movie according to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy:

"She was having a blast" … "The minute she finished, she grabbed me and said, ‘I’d better be at the forefront of IX!’ Because Harrison was front and center on VII, and Mark is front and center on VIII. She thought IX would be her movie. And it would have been.

Of course that changed after her death, and Lucasfilm decided to write the character out of the next chapter rather than feature a different actress or a CGI stand-in.

That article also introduces us to a couple of new characters in the film. Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo (Laura Dern) is a "prominent officer" in the Resistance. Benicio Del Toro will be playing an unnamed character, but who the crew refer to as "DJ". DJ will be a shady character who director Rian Johnson said that we'll see why they refer to him as "DJ". We'll also get a second, hear that second, Asian character in this next Star Wars movie. Paige will be played by Veronica Ngo, and is a Resistance gunner and sister to Kelly Marie Tran's character, Rose Tico. Johnson also talked about one a new location in The Last Jedi, Canto Bight. Canto Bight will be a Monte Carlo-type location that let Johnson explore a slightly different kind of environment for Star Wars:

"I was thinking, O.K., let’s go ultra-glamour. Let’s create a playground, basically, for rich assholes"
