TV's Adam West, best known for portraying Batman on the 1960s TV show Batman, died of leukemia June 9 at 88. He is survived by his wife Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

West caught the attention of Batman producer Bill Dozier when he played Captain Quik, a James Bond-type character with a sailor's cap, in commercials for Nestle's Quik. His Batman contract included that he be given the chance to approve who would play Robin, agreeing with the casting of Burt Ward, who had a brown belt in karate and no acting experience. Batman lasted three seasons and one movie.

His acting career dried up after Batman ended in 1968, but he gained a resurgence when Seth MacFarlane cast him as the Mayor in Family Guy in 1999, giving the world a renewed love for West.
