When the Star Wars: The Force Awakens edition of Monopoly was released in 2015, a very prominent main character was missing in Rey. Even the film's director J.J. Abrams said the act was "preposterous." Lucasfilm claimed that the character wasn't included to prevent leaks about her before the film's release. Apparently, they didn't want people to know she was in the movie.
Lucasfilm announced that Rey would be a prominent part of the next wave of toys, and Hasbro said that it would add the character to the next release of the game, alongside the original four characters: Luke Skywalker, Finn, Kylo Ren, and Darth Vader. Hasbro manufactured the figure and sold it world-wide, except in the United States, due to "insufficient interest," according to company spokeswoman Julie Duffy.
And that next release of Monopoly that would add Rey outright? Never happened, thanks to "the original version of the 2015 game was selling well [in the US] and retailers had adequate inventory so they opted not to list the new version."
The bigger issue is that there wasn't female representation in the game. Darth Vader wasn't even in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
