Filmmaker and godfather of the modern zombie movie George Romero died Sunday at 77, following a "brief but aggressive battle with lung cancer," according to his producing partner Peter Grunwald. He died while listening to the score of one his favorite films, 1952's The Quiet Man, with his wife, Suzanne Desrocher Romero, and daughter, Tina Romero, at his side.

Romero launched the modern zombie genre in 1968 with Night of the Living Dead, showing filmmakers big budgets weren't necessary to scare audiences. That first film spawned sequels including 1978's Dawn of the Dead, 1985's Day of the Dead, 2005's Land of the Dead, 2007's Diary of the Dead, and 2009's Survival of the Dead. His other notable films include 1973's The Crazies, 1982's Creepshow, and 1993's The Dark Half

Night of the Living Dead was progressive for its time, casting Duane Jones as the first black lead in a horror film. In 2013, Romero revealed that he was asked to direct episodes of The Walking Dead, but turned it down.

"Basically it's just a soap opera with a zombie occasionally," he told the Big Issue. "I always used the zombie as a character for satire or a political criticism, and I find that missing in what's happening now."

When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth.
