Have A Peek At Some 'Star Trek: Discovery' Gadgets

Plus an artsy look at the U.S.S. Discovery

Source: @startrekcbs Twitter feed

Star Trek: Discovery is headed toward the small screen soon and CBS is starting to tease fans with little bits of information. Today, via Twitter, the official account posted a few images of some of the gadgets we'll see in the show. Since it is set ten years before the original Star Trek series (aka. Star Trek: TOS) the gadgets aren't from a far future (like what Star Trek: The Next Generation did), but rooted somewhere in-between the episodes The Cage and The Man Trap.

Of course, since TOS was made in the 1960s, both technology to create TV shows and technology in society have advanced, so the onscreen Trekverse probably wouldn't benefit from following the aesthetic of TOS too slavishly (see what they did with Star Trek: Enterprise, which was set the century before TOS). Let's take a look at what CBS showed.

From the first look trailer we got a tiny peek a the communicator. Discovery honors the flip up communicators seen in both The Cage (which takes place in the year 2254) and The Man Trap (2266), so Discovery takes place roughly around the time of The Cage.

Here's the Discovery version, a little sleeker than the one from The Cage, and sans the optical illusion "screen" of the 2260s version with something more utilitarian:

Next up is what appears to be a Type-2 phaser. In The Cage, the Enterprise crew actually used laser pistols, not phasers.

Discovery largely keeps the look of the phaser from the 2260s, with a different barrel, slightly more like the laser pistol or an electric shaver.

Finally there appears to be a gadget resembling a rifle. In the 2260s Starfleet did carry type 3 phasers on occassion (rarely)…

This new gadget looks much sleeker than the 2260s weapon, well from what we can see:

We also got another look at the title ship earlier in the week. The first look trailer for Discovery gave us a look at the USS Shenzhou, but not previous to that. The first promotional trailer did give us a look at the USS Discovery at that time, but it was said that was not the final form. We got another look more recently but it was a bit dark. This new look is via an art poster that will be shown off (along with other Discovery related art works) at San Diego Comic-Con related event, the Star Trek: Discovery Gallery Takeover:

Star Trek: Discovery launches on September 24.
