Toho Cannot Make a Godzilla Movie Until After 2020!

Shinji Higuchi, the co-director of 'Shin Godzilla' has revealed that Toho cannot make a new Godzilla live-action movie until after 2020's Godzilla vs. Kong!

If you saw Shin Godzilla, and are hoping for one more glorious Godzilla movie from Toho (the company that owns the king of all monsters) in the near future, well I've got some bad news for you. It was revealed during a Q&A panel with Shin Godzilla co-director Shinji Higuchi at G-Fest XXIV (THE place to see if you love sentai and kaiju genre).

The co-director revealed that Toho and Legendary Pictures had inked a deal where basically Toho was allowed to make one Godzilla film in the time-span from after 2014 to 2016 (they had just made it under the deadline to release Shin and as well why they didn't release it at the end of the year, like other Godzilla films in the past). Further, he elaborated any new Godzilla film from Toho cannot be made until after 2020 due to Godzilla vs. Kong

Here's a video of that interview (courtesy of ExtermCentral) and Higuchi revealing this info at the 12:00-minute mark:

This now explains why Toho suddenly is making a big deal out of the release of the Godzilla anime trilogy that's going to start coming out later this year (and why they inked a deal with Netflix to distribute it here in the states). It seems entirely possible this would be a loophole through the deal that could get Toho to continue to make Godzilla movies, just animated ones instead of live-action. Which basically means that if they keep this a yearly thing we would have animated Godzilla movies all the way to-- 2019.

Still, those hankering for more live-action Godzilla, Shin Godzilla will be released on Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital on August 1st. Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the sequel to the 2014 Legendary film, will be released on March 22nd, 2019 (happy birthday to me).
