R.I.P. Haruo Nakajima (1929-2017)

The suit actor who played Godzilla in the original 1954 classic then reprised the role for the next EIGHTEEN years has passed away at the age of 88.

This feels like a gut punch, and I can barely breathe. It hurts that much to know we lost Haruo Nakajima today. Nakajima may not be a name normal folk may not know, when realizing he played the iconic role of Godzilla in the original 1954 classic Gojira and following eleven sequels all the way to Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972). Then you begin to realize just how many films you've seen him in.

But Godzilla wasn't the only Kaiju he played. Rodan? Mothra? Baragon? Varan? He played all of them. If there was a kaiju film from Toho in the 60s to 70s. There was a 99.9% chance Nakajima played a kaiju in it. He even showed up as Jirass Ultraman (he played other Kaiju, but come on. Him in a modified Godzilla suit vs. freaking Ultraman? How can you not be overjoyed of a fight like that?).

It was also his little touches that gave Godzilla character as well from the famous victory dance in Godzilla vs. Monster Zero, taunting his aquatic foe with their own pincer in Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, or the way he reacted whenever around him. Every bit of character of Godzilla came from Nakajima.

It's weird in a way to feel like this for a man I've never met. Yet, all my life I've watched his performance via all these films so much. To give me so much light in the darkness of depression I've dwelled in at times.  If that doesn't tell you how much his role was that far-reaching and impactful I don't know what can. Thank you, Mr. Nakajima. Thank you so very much.
