Piranha II Director James Cameron Says Wonder Woman Movie Is Step Backwards

And Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins fires back.

Future Avatar 5 director James Cameron thinks he knows a thing or two about female protagonists, having had Sarah Connor in The Terminator and Ellen Ripley in Aliens. So much so that he didn't hesitate to weigh in on Wonder Woman's success, claiming its a step backwards.

"All of the self-congratulatory back-patting Hollywood's been doing over Wonder Woman has been so misguided. She's an objectified icon, and it's just male Hollywood doing the same old thing! I'm not saying I didn't like the movie but, to me, it's a step backwards. Sarah Connor was not a beauty icon. She was strong, she was troubled, she was a terrible mother, and she earned the respect of the audience through pure grit. And to me, [the benefit of characters like Sarah] is so obvious. I mean, half the audience is female!"

Cameron was asked his thoughts on why Hollywood can't figure out why to portray truly powerful women, despite all his efforts to show them how to do it.

"I don't – I don't know. There are many women in power in Hollywood and they do get to guide and shape what films get made. I think – no, I can't account for it. Because how many times do I have to demonstrate the same thing over again? I feel like I'm shouting in a wind tunnel!"

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins took to Twitter to clapback at the Piranha II: The Spawning director.

"There is no right and wrong kind of powerful woman." Despite Cameron's insistence that he knows what is right.

James Cameron's Avatar 2 is set to release Dec 18, 2020. Patty Jenkins is in final talks to director Wonder Woman 2, which is set to release Dec 13, 2019.
