Earlier this week, Ed Skrein was cast as Major Ben Daimio in Neil Marshall's Hellboy reboot. Daimio is a member of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. The character is able to turn into a jaguar when he gets angry or is in pain because of a prior supernatural incident. He is also a Japanese-American, which has caused a blowback on the internet for whitewashing.

Robert Chan, president of MANAA (Media Action Network for Asian Americans) said, "It's frustrating. I think the casting in 'Hellboy' is more of the same. You're taking an Asian character and casting a non-Asian into the role." Guy Aoki, MANAA's founding president, added, "There's a cultural and racial tie-in to the Daimio character where his grandmother was supposed to be a Japanese Imperial assassin during World War II. It just doesn't make sense to lose that cultural context."

Fans also took to Twitter to lament the casting.

Other recent films including whitewashing include Aloha, The Last AirbenderDeath Note, and Ghost in the Shell. "Most of those films that whitewash a character, they flop and lose a lot of money. 'Ghost in the Shell' was a major flop," Aoki said.

The Hellboy reboot, formerly titled Hellboy: Rise Of The Blood Queen, is directed by Marshall, and stars David Harbour as Hellboy, Ian McShane as Trevor Bruttenholm, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan, and Milla Jovovich as The Blood Queen. The film, which is shooting for an R rating, is set to film this fall for a 2018 release.
